味覚の秋にも関わらず近頃はジャンクフードばかり食べている、いつか使ってみたい英語表現シリーズ。

lie on one’s stomach [belly]
腹ばいになる

ムーミンの小説から英語表現を紹介するのは今回がおそらく最後でござる。そして今回はシリーズ第8作目の「ムーミンパパ海へ行く(邦題) / Moominpappa at Sea(英題) / Pappan och havet(原題)」の63ページ目の冒頭の文からでござる。

MOOMINTROLL and Little My lay on their stomachs in the sun looking into the thicket. It was low and tangled; tiny angry-looking spruce trees and even smaller birches battling with the wind all their lives. They grew very close together for protection. The tops of the trees had stopped growing, but the branches held on tight to the ground wherever they could reach it.

直訳すると「お腹の上に横たわる」という事で特に説明は不要でござろうな。また同じ系統の似たような表現としては以下のようなものがあるでござるよ。

lie on one’s face
うつ伏せになる

lie on one’s back
仰向けになる

lie on one’s side
横向きに寝る

こうして英語表現と日本語表現を比べてみると、日本語の方は「うつむく → うつ伏せ」「仰ぎ見る → 仰向け」「横を向く → 横向き」などと動作をする人間の視線を中心に表現されているのに対し、英語の方は前置詞の on によって地面と身体の接地点を中心に表現されているようでござるな。この事が解ればこれを応用して色々と細かな表現も可能でござろう。
