孔子の論語の翻訳439回目、季子第十六の八でござる。

漢文
孔子曰、君子有三畏、畏天命、畏大人、畏聖人之言、小人不知天命而不畏也、狎大人、侮聖人之言。

書き下し文
孔子曰わく、君子に三畏(さんい)あり。天命を畏(おそ)れ、大人(たいじん)を畏れ、聖人の言を畏る。小人は天命を知らずして畏れず、大人に狎(な)れ、聖人の言を侮る。

英訳文
Confucius said, “A gentleman stands in awe of three things. He stands in awe of heaven’s will, great men and words of the saint. A worthless man cannot understand heaven’s will and does not stand in awe of it. He takes liberties with great men and despises words of the saint.”

現代語訳
孔子がおっしゃいました、
「人の手本たるべき君子は三つのものを畏れ敬う。天の意志を畏れ、徳の優れた偉大な人々を畏れ、聖人の言葉を畏れる。つまらない人間は天の意志を理解できず畏れ敬う事も無く、偉大な人々になれなれしくし、聖人の言葉を侮る。」
